The Philippine national team suffered yet another basketball heartbreaker on Saturday against South Korea, squandering a 16-point first half lead to lose, 97-95, in their quarterfinals matchup.

After the game, Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes took the blame for the loss, which came with naturalized center Marcus Douthit riding the bench all game.

"The entire responsibility falls on my shoulders. I want to apologize to our people," Reyes told reporters after the game.

The coach admitted that Douthit was benched for disciplinary reasons. Reyes described the sanction as "indefinite."

The benching came a day after Reyes blasted Douthit's perceived lack of effort in Gilas' defeat to Qatar.

With two straight quarterfinals, Gilas' hopes to advance to the next round are slim, with the team needing Kazakhstan to win against Qatar on Saturday to have a chance. Gilas would then need to defeat Kazakhstan on Sunday.

Douthit's status for the Kazakhstan game is still up for discussion, according to Reyes. — JST, GMA News
