Netizens notice, appreciate Mang Tani’s efforts to stifle laughter during broadcast

On Saturday’s Balitanghali broadcast, GMA’s resident meteorologist Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz committed a slight blooper that he recovered from, with an incredible show of self-restraint.

When anchor Jun Veneracion asked him for updates about tropical depression Josie, Mang Tani replied: “Yes Josie! Ay, Josie tuloy. Yes Jun!”

He said it in one full breath, with a straight face, as you can hear people in the studio laughing loudly.

Ever the professional, Mang Tani, made sure he answered Jun Veneracion’s question as intelligently as possible even as his voice quivered from restrained laughter.

Mang Tani’s gallant attempt at self-control resonated with amused viewers who recalled school recitations nearly ruined by an itch to laugh.

More than the amount of times the clip has been viewed on YouTube — over 70,000 times as of this writing — Mang Tani’s little blooper has also been turned into a meme.

“Yun natatawa kana pero kailangan pigilan dahil graded ang reporting,” one Facebook community page said, picking up the clip. That video has been viewed over 5 million times and shared more than 150,000 times.

“Na-ubo kasi ako before my broadcast, tapos sa camera, naka prompt ‘TD Josie’ kaya nung nagtanong si Jun, nawala ako sa concentration. ‘Josie’ una kong nasabi,” Mang Tani tells GMA News Online, when we asked about the incident.

He said he has been getting a lot of calls and texts about yesterday’s incident telling him he’s gone viral — “even my wife in Australia saw it as well,” he shares — but the meteorologist said he hasn’t seen the clip since it happened. “Ayaw ko muna [panuorin], kasi mag-bo-broadcast ulit ngayon, si Jun din kasama ko, baka magkatawanan kami,” he says good-naturedly.

According to Mang Tani, there were people in the studio stifling their laughter, while there were those who couldn’t. “Sa control room, nagtatawanan na rin sila, without knowing that people in the studio were also laughing,” he continued.

“Totoo bang viral na?” Mang Tani asked self-consciously, before saying he hopes what people are saying are good.

Well Mang Tani, you just became super relatable, triggering nostalgia among netizens, who gladly shared memories of how they stifled laughter during many a graded recitation in school. — LA, GMA News
