‘Kong: Skull Island’ final trailer is action-packed and rhythmic

The final trailer for “Kong: Skull Island” has just dropped, and it’s packed with explosive action, gorgeous giant monsters, and occasionally awkward humor.

Entitled “Rise of the King,” the official final trailer follows James Conrad (Tom Hiddleston) and his team as they make their foray into Skull Island. Of course, we all know how that turns out.

“Kong: Skull Island” director Jordan Vogt-Roberts tweeted afterwards that the final trailer was a result of his obsession with “The Handmaiden” trailer, which explains the rhythmic nature of “Rise of the King.”

The trailer is set to the beat of The Animals’ “We’ve Got to Get Out of This Place,” which is appropriate given the main characters’ predicament, and the period in which the movie is set.

“Kong: Skull Island” takes place in the 1970s during the Vietnam War, in contrast to other King Kong movies, whose events occur in the 1930s. The original script for “Kong: Skull Island” was to be set even earlier than that, until Jordan Vogt-Roberts pitched his idea.

“The script I first read took place in 1917,” Vogt-Roberts told Empire Online. “But when I started talking to the Legendary [Entertainment] guys, I was thinking, ‘What weird King Kong movie would I want to see?’ So I pitched them the Vietnam War connection, literally thinking they were gonna laugh me out of the room. And to Legendary’s credit, they said, ‘Cool. Let’s figure it out.’ The aesthetics of that time mixed with King Kong makes for an incredible genre mash-up.”

In “Kong: Skull Island,” the Monarch organization identifies a mysterious island as the place of origin of an undiscovered species. The expedition they send to the island finds out that the giant ape Kong is battling other enormous monsters, known as the Skullcrawlers, for supremacy.

Monarch was first introduced in the 2014 kaiju film “Godzilla.” In fact, this King Kong and this Godzilla exist in the same shared cinematic universe; “Kong: Skull Island” is meant to bridge the gap between the films. Godzilla will get his sequel in 2018, after which the two behemoths will go head to head in 2020’s “Godzilla vs. Kong.”

“Godzilla vs. Kong” won’t be the first film to pit the iconic creatures against each other. In 1962, Toho’s “King Kong vs. Godzilla” was released in Japan. It proved extremely popular with moviegoers, cementing its financial success and paving the way for a sequel. Sadly, that sequel never happened. Let’s hope “Kong: Skull Island” and all related films will be successful enough to keep the kaiju train going.

“Kong: Skull Island” is produced by Legendary Entertainment and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

In addition to Hiddleston, “Kong: Skull Island” stars Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Brie Larson, John C. Reilly, Jing Tian, Toby Kebbell, John Ortiz, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Shea Whigham, Thomas Mann, and Terry Notary.
