After ‘scripted’ critique, Catriona Gray shares sober thoughts on knee-jerk hate

In a world filled with haters, bashers, and trolls, beauty queen Catriona Gray shared some words that apply to situations beyond the one she found herself in over the weekend.

Turning her attention to fans who took negatively a remark addressed to her, Catriona clarified that she welcomes constructive criticism. As someone competing for a major, major crown, she said that advice from past queens are always valuable.

"Everyone is entitled to their opinion and although at times you may not favor it, it doesn't give a good reason to turn around and try to hurt others through bullying or bashing," Catriona said in social media post on Monday.

"Be passionate, but be mindful. Let's cultivate an environment, not just in beauty pageants but in society in general, where we argue like we're right but listen like we're wrong. Debate is healthy, bashing is not," she continued.

In a TV special which aired on Sunday, one of her fellow beauty queens, Miss International Philippines 2017 Mariel De Leon, shared some insights on how she can improve herself.

Speaking before a panel, Catriona shared that her strength is being an empath. "I feel very strongly and I find that when I sing through music, it helps me connect to people," Catriona said.

"I really love your confidence and the way you speak, but sometimes it seems just a tiny bit scripted," Mariel told her in response.

In a Instagram post on Monday, Mariel emphasized the fact that "True queens fix each other’s crowns."

"As strong and empowered women, we are open to one another for these healthy discussions knowing we have the best of intentions for each other," she continued.

Her remark, she said, came from a good place with good intentions. She knows more than a thing or two about what it takes to place in Binibining Pilipinas and, having competed in an international pageant, she has useful tips she can share with the candidates.
