That’s one way to apologize.

A Japanese woman caused a commotion at the Cagayan de Oro City market last Tuesday, when she started handing out wads of cold hard cash to strangers.

With people receiving as much as P50,000 in one go, excited bystanders and onlookers started hounding and chasing the generous Japanese.

An onlooker Hasmin saw the commotion and decided to rescue the Japanese. She hid her in a sari-sari store and gave her merienda of instant noodles. In return, she gave him wads and wads of cash.

Police Investigator SPO1 Narciso Suarez identified the generous woman as Mariko Tsuchioka from Hiroshima, Japan.

According to the police, Mariko’s grandfather was a member of the Japanese Imperial Army during World War 2.

Before he passed away last month, he instructed Mariko to go to the Philippines and give about P1 million of his money as an act of apology, good will, and reparation to the Filipino people who died in the war.

And so on September 30, she brought her lolo’s money and flew to the Philippines by herself.

At the airport, she met a local woman who told her to go to Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao, where she fulfilled her grandfather’s last wish. — LA, GMA News
