At the face and poise prejudging event at the Cove in Okada Manila on Saturday, the 90 candidates of Miss Earth 2018 faced the judges, media, and pageant enthusiasts fresh-faced and without makeup.

And according to a report by Athena Imperial on GMA News TV's Balitanghali, it's a refreshing turn of events that a few candidates loved.

“Wow, okay. My skin gets to breathe for the first time in the Philippines,” Miss South Africa Margo Faith Fargo said before admitting it was also "quite daunting because there’s a certain level in standards of beauty."

Her thoughts are not without basis: In fact, 65% of their total score will come from this round.

“Honestly, I feel really, really good,” began Miss Vietnam Nguyen Phuong Khanh. “I don’t need to wear makeup and I’m being true to myself. I’m showing my true self to the world.”

“I think it’s really great because we need to show how we really are, how our face is really are,” Miss Sweden Yasmine Michelle Mindru agreed.

The producers of Miss Earth 2018 reasoned it's because the pageant really is an environmental event. “Trabaho ang ginagawa ng girls. Naisip namin, pag gising nila, kailangan nila mag-tree planting, or mag-pulot ng basura or mag-turo, dapat yung natural beauty,” Lorraine Schuck, EVP of Carousel Productions said.

Truer words have never been spoken. Cheers to this refreshing twist, Miss Earth!

The coronation night for the pageant will be on November 3. GMA-7 will air the event. — LA, GMA News
