3 things to check before buying a beauty product

Beauty products from all over the world have now become accessible, thanks to the growth of online shopping.

The flip side of this accessibility though? The spread of expired beauty products, and worse: fake ones, too.

On “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho,” three women shared how fake and expired beauty products ruined their skin.

There’s Genevieve, 31, who experienced intense red spotting in her underarms after applying a whitening product she bought from an online shop.

“Natakot ako kasi akala ko baka mag-spread siya sa lahat ng katawan ko. Nagpatingin na ako sa doctor kasi bumaba na siya sa may breast area ko,” she said.

According to the dermatologist, the cream she used was too strong for her skin type, resulting in an irritation.

Physical stores are also not safe from fake and expired cosmetics.

17-year-old Shayren can attest to this after her lips became swollen and infected because of a lip tint. The lip tint, which she received as a gift, was apparently only bought at a sari-sari store for just P40. The product was also purchased without a seal.

20-year-old Juliane, meanwhile, suddenly had an intense breakout, after using a BB Cream that she scored at a tiangge for only P50.

To avoid suffering the same fate as these ladies, take note of these three safety tips on buying beauty products:

1. Price. If it’s too cheap, or way below the average price of the product, don’t buy it. Don’t go cheap, especially with products for areas that are as important as your face.

2. Seal. Do yourself a favor: Please don’t buy or use products with a broken seal. It indicates that the item has likely been tampered with.

3. The FDA list. The fastest and cheapest way to know whether or not the beauty product is legit is to check the Food and Drug Administration’s list of products that are safe to use. The list is on their website. If the product you’re interested in is not there, then best to not indulge yourself. — LA, GMA News
