Good news for eco-tourism fans: a cave under the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge in Cebu may soon be the latest ecological tourism attraction.

The cave is also believed to be a venue for rituals by local medicine men (albularyo), GMA Cebu's Alan Domingo reported Friday.

The cave is in a vacant grassy lot in Lapu-Lapu City owned by a private company and is still closed to the public.

Inside the cave are stalagmites and stalactites, and clear water from a well.

"Joining with the barangay and city na gawing eco-tourism ang kwebang ito," said Barangay Pajo (Lapu-Lapu City) captain Ahong Chan.

The cave reportedly leads to the shrine of the Birhen sa Regla in Lapu-Lapu City.

Local barangay officials believe it could be an eco-tourism attraction if the path to the shrine is reopened.

"Yang nilagyan ng semento yan ang daanan papunta doon sa kabilang lagusan doon sa Birhen sa Regla. Once ma-develop ano, yung ma-sangayunan ng city at sa may-ari ng lupa, yun ang aming gagawin," Chan said. — Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News
