Duterte accuses big mining firms of destroying the environment


President-elect Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday evening cited big mining companies for environmental destruction and dared the industry to "shape up."

In his speech at his thanksgiving party held at the Davao City's Crocodile Farm, Duterte said, "The problem with big mining companies is they are destroying our land ... mining people must shape up ... lahat ng malalaking miners must stop, they are despoiling our land."

Duterte also said only the big mining interests from Manila are benefiting from mining and the small ones in Mindanao are at the losing end.

"Ang masakit, pati mga moro people they are [pushed over to] the marginal side of business. This must change," he said.

He said he would like the mining industry to be run like a cooperative of all Filipinos.

Also, he said that people from Mindanao would be given priority. "Mauna muna ang mga taga-Mindanao na mahihirap."

"We will support them and give instruction on how to" manage mining efforts without destroying the land in Mindanao.

Duterte also touched on a number issues he used as his campaign promise, including criminality and illegal drugs, health, corruption and education.

A report on "News TV Live" said Duterte arrived with his running-mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano at about 8:30 p.m. amid tight security.

As Duterte ascended onto the stage, the people were shouting "Duterte ... Duterte ... Duterte."

Members of the Presidential Security Group further tightened security for Duterte upon his arrival at the party venue inside the Davao City Crocodile Farm.

Earlier, rock bands and break dancers entertained the crowd, which began to build from mid-morning under overcast skies, a report by Agence France-Presse said.

The city of less than two million last month saw its long-time mayor Duterte win a landslide election victory. His six-year term as president starts on June 3
