DTI targets 58th place in ease of doing business ranking from 99

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is aiming to make the Philippines's ranking in ease of doing business leapfrog this year, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said Thursday.

"For ease of doing business, we are now targeting from 99 to about 58 to 63," Lopez told reporters in a press conference in Makati City.

"We are cutting down further the number of steps and number of days in starting a business," he said.

The Philippines climbed four notches to 99 in the World Bank-International Finance Corporation Doing Business 2017 report, reflecting a better standing from 103 in the 2016 rankings. The report, released in October of last year, covered 190 countries.

Lopez noted efforts are now focused on reducing the number of days in renewing or getting a business permit to one, from two to three.

"For the entire process – nasa 16 steps 'yan – gagawing six steps, and 'yung current 28 days gagawing eight days na lang," he said.

DTI Assistant Secretary Arturo Boncato Jr. said that the goal is to be in the top -one third World Bank-International Finance Corp. ranking

“’Yan po ay pinaghahandaan natin at meron tayong tinatawag na Game Plan No. 5. Nakasulat sa game plan ano yung mga activities at mga paraan para mapapa-angat ang ranking natin overall,” Boncato said during the same press conference.

Boncato noted the government of New Zealand wants to collaborate with the Philippines in improving doing business by sharing country innovations.

“Bakit New Zealand ang partner natin? Kasi po sila ang number one sa Doing Business Report ng 2017. So napaka-generous po nila at sa unang pagkakataon they are sending their experts to our country, Pilipinas po ang unang beneficiary ng tulong nila,” the DTI official said.

The department is also working with technical working groups from the offices of Sen. Miguel Zubiri and Iloilo 4th District Rep. Ferjenel Biron, Boncato added. The lawmakers are both sponsors of a bill on ease of doing business. — VDS, GMA News
