PCC to conduct market studies on logistics sector

The Philippine Competition Commission is set to take a closer look at the logistics sector next year to address possible anti-competitive practices in the industry.

“We have a couple of market studies that we have lined up for purposes of understanding the logistics sector better. This would include shipping, I think, land transpo," Commissioner Stella Quimbo told reporters in Makati City.

The Philippine Competition Act mandates the PCC to review all business transactions worth P1 billion and above to see weed out if any anti-competitive deals.

Quimbo said the market studies may be used for two things: filing cases against anti-competitive practices and advocating for policy changes in government.

“How we will use the findings of the market study, it’s still not set at this point. It could either go two ways: use findings to open a case because one of our mandates is to advise government; or if there are competitive concerns that can be addressed by not opening a case but rather by influencing government in their policy making, then that’s one track,” she said.

Quimbo said market studies generally take six months to complete, and the PCC intends to begin in January. — VDS, GMA News
