Gov’t open to foreign teachers training Pinoys in data analytics, artificial intelligence

The government is now working on allowing foreign professionals to train employees of the information technology-business process management (IT-BPM) sector in the shift towards artificial intelligence.

“We have proposed to liberalize the entry of those who can train our people for this high-level skills development, even just for the short-term,” National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Undersecretary Rosemarie Edillon said in a press conference in Pasig City on Tuesday.

Under current Philippine laws, foreign investors are not allowed to own, establish, and administer educational institutions in the country.

Edillon said the country is open to foreign teachers entering the country and training Filipinos, especially in the data analytics and robotics.

“We start bringing in those teachers or professionals and allow them to teach in the universities,” she noted.

“We do not see any legal challenge. We don’t see any problem with the coming in and teaching,” she said.

Edillon has said the IT-BPM sector would likely face headwinds in the form of artificial intelligence and big data analytics which could cause an industry slowdown. —VDS, GMA News
