Tons of tomatoes returned from markets, dumped in Laguna town
Tons of tomatoes have been left to rot in Kalayaan, Laguna after too much supply flooded the market.
According to Sandra Aguinaldo's report on "24 Oras", the excess tomatoes were returned and disposed of in the area.
"Napatapon na e. Ibinalik na ng truck sa dami," a farmer said.
The farmers said they had no choice but to sell the tomatoes at a loss.
Large tomatoes go for five pesos a kilo while medium-sized ones are sold at P2.50 a kilo.
Kalayaan Mayor Leni Adao has asked the national government for assistance.
"Ang inyo pong lingkod ay hindi titigil para kayo bigyan ng ayuda," she said.
In 2017, Laguna ranked 10th among the provinces in terms of tomato prodiction.
It accounted for 6,084 metric tons or three percent of the country's total tomato production last year. —NB, GMA News
