Price guide for school supplies released by DTI

Parents can now check if their local shops are selling school supplies at the right price correctly with the price guide released by the Department of Trade and Industry.

According to a report by GMA News' Lei Alviz on "24 Oras," the 2017 price guide of school supplies shows the suggested retail price of various brands of school essentials.

DTI Consumer Protection Group head Usec. Teodoro Pascua advised parents to complete their shopping ahead of the June 5 opening to ensure that the school supplies they purchase are of good quality.

"Siguraduhin lang po nila na sana talagang meron silang oras na ilalaan kasi kung mag-last minute tayo, talagang sa dami ng tao in any place, talagang magsisiksikan po, wala na po tayong paraan para masuri ng maiigi kung yung binibili natin ay tama,"  Pascua explained.

Parents were also advised to avoid buying products branded in a foreign language as they are most likely not registered with the DTI and to report shops practicing price manipulation and profiteering.

The price guide should be seen at every school supply shop and could be downloaded from the DTI website.

Despite the warning, the DTI explained that some school supplies naturally shot up in price due to a weak peso driving up the prices of raw materials. — Rie Takumi/BAP, GMA News
