Quinta vendors face Mayor Erap in market demolition

More than 500 vendors faced Manila Mayor Joseph "Erap" Estrada, and the Manila Police District and its SWAT at the demolition of Quinta Market in Manila on Monday.

GMA's "24 Oras" reported that the vendors opposed the privatization of market over fears merchants who cannot afford rent at the new market may be displaced.

"Maari po kaming makabalik, sa pamamagitan ng malaking halaga. Hindi po kakayanin ng mga maliit na mga maninindang katulad namin ang hihilingin nila siguro," Quinta Market Development Cooperative board member Roel Manahan said.

Estrada later clarified with vendors that the renovations are part of a joint venture and not of privatization, claiming that he did not sell any part of the iconic market.

"Mali yung basa niyo. Maraming nagsasabi sa inyong siraulong abogado. Ito, joint venture. Hindi ito privatization- wala akong palengkeng binebenta dito," Estrada said.
