Pasay councilor shot at SM Southmall declared dead

A Pasay City councilor injured in a shooting incident at SM Southmall in Las Piñas City on Saturday night has been pronounced dead.

Senior Superintendent Marion Balonglong, Las Piñas City police chief, said Pasay City Councilor Borbie Rivera was declared dead-on-arrival at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Muntinlupa City.

He said Rivera sustained gunshot wounds in the head and body.

The councilor was shot by motorcycle-riding gunmen outside Door 4 of SM Southmall at around 8:30 p.m.

Balonglong said one of the gunmen was seen boarding a black SUV.

An earlier radio dzBB report said the councilor's security men were able to fire back at the gunmen.

The councilor had survived an ambush in Pasay City last June.

The shooting incident caused a commotion inside the mall, which was forced to temporarily suspend operations.

At past 9 p.m., the mall's operations went back to normal after police cleared the area where the shooting incident happened.

The mall was packed with people during the shooting incident because of a three-day sale. —Anna Felicia Bajo/ALG, GMA News
