Woman’s arm reattached after MRT-3 accident

A transportation official on Wednesday said surgeons were successfully able to reattach a woman's severed arm following an accident at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

"Angeline's arm is reconnected to her body. The bone, the nerve and vessels are reconnected. She is under observation at least until Friday (this week)," Transportation Undersecretary for Rails Cesar Chavez told reporters.

Angeline Fernando, 24, of Pasay City lost her right arm in an accident at the MRT-3 Ayala station in Makati City on Tuesday around 2:30 p.m.

Fernando, a senior quality engineer at an information technology company based in Makati, had just alighted from the northbound train and felt dizzy, causing her to fall onto the tracks.

A security guard tried to help Fernando, according to a report on Unang Balita on Wednesday. YouScooper Raffy Longasa was able to video responders giving first aid.

She was rushed to the Makati Medical Center immediately after the incident.

Chavez said Angeline's mother, Gloria Callos Fernando, told him that Angeline usually gets dizzy in a crowd.

"Nahihilo si Angeline minsan 'pag maraming tao. Lumalabas siya sa simbahan 'pag nagsisimba kami kasi nahihirapan siya huminga 'pag maraming tao," Chavez said, citing Angeline's mother.

A close friend of Fernando who refused to be named also told Chavez the same thing.

"Nasa Greenbelt kami minsan. Bigla na lang siyang namutla. Muntik muntikan na siyang mahimatay. Sinugod rin namin siya sa Makati Med dahil low blood," Chavez said, citing Fernando's friend.

Chavez also vowed that the government will extend financial assistance to Fernando.

"Hindi ka namin pababayaan. Hindi ka namin iiwanan," Chavez told her.
