Raps filed vs. suspects in 2002 GenSan mall bombing

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Friday filed with the Department of Justice multiple murder and multiple frustrated murder charges against two alleged members of the Abu Sayyaf and two Saudi national implicated in the April 2002 bombing of a shopping mall in General Santos City.

The NBI Counter Terrorism Division (NBI-CTD) identified those charged as alleged Abu Sayyaf members Khair Mundos and Borhan Mundos, who are currently under police custody. Also charged were two Saudi Arabian nationals who remain at large.

The suspects were charged based on a testimony from a former Abu Sayyaf member who turned into a government witness. Fourteen people were killed in the bombing that happened on April 21, 2002.

The witness claimed Khair facilitated the financing of the bombing operation through the aid of the two Saudi nationals, while Borhan was involved in the planning of the bombing operation.

Khair was arrested by the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) on June 11, 2014 at Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City while Borhan was arrested when he arrived on November 20, 2014 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Both are now under the police custody in Camp Crame.

The Mundos brothers had earlier been charged of different crimes related to terrorism.

"The additional cases filed by the NBI will further bolster government’s criminal case against them in their participation in several terrorist atrocities against the people of Mindanao," the NBI said in a statement. —Mark Merueñas/KBK, GMA News
