Hontiveros to Duterte: Rape is not a joke

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Saturday condemned President Rodrigo Duterte's rape joke before soldiers involved in the implementation of martial law in Mindanao, saying that the chief executive's remark is a "violation of the Bill of rights."

"Again, rape is not a joke. Rape is a crime. Rape is a violation of the Bill of Rights [which] is not suspended by Martial Law. Rape is not a joke," Hontiveros said in a statement on Saturday.

Duterte on Friday expressed his intention to take responsibility for the actions of soldiers during the martial law implementation in Mindanao.

He then said in jest that he could even go to jail for the soldiers if they committed rape.

“‘Pag naka-rape ka ng tatlo, aminin ko na akin iyon," Duterte said while visiting soldiers in Iligan City.

"‘Pag nag-asawa ka ng apat, t—ina, bugbugin ka ng—ito si Delfin,” he added in apparent reference to Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana. —Marlly Rome Bondoc/LBG, GMA News
