KILLING OF MINOR 'ISOLATED'

Duterte won't tolerate police abuse, Palace assures public

Malacañang on Friday assured the public that President Rodrigo Duterte will not tolerate police abuses following the killing of a 17-year-old high school student during a massive anti-drug operation in Caloocan City.

At the Mindanao Hour briefing, presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella tagged the killing of Kian Loyd delos Santos as "isolated."

"That incident... I think is isolated," he said.

According to the police, Delos Santos, a Grade 11 student, ran away and tried to fight back with a gun when authorities conducted Oplan Galugad on Wednesday night. His relatives and other witnesses, however, said otherwise.

To this, Abella assured the public that Duterte would not let police get away with their abuses despite his promise to protect and defend law enforcers who are performing his drug war.

"I cannot assume what the President thinks but what we can say with confidence that those who are guilty of breaking the law, misuse or abuse will have to answer for that," he said.

"He will defend the police in their carrying out of duties. However, he will also not tolerate any abuse and breaches of the law," he added.

Duterte's drug war has been blamed for the death of over 6,000 people, most of them drug suspects, since he assumed office. Recently, it has resulted in the death of over 80 people in separate anti-drug operations in Bulacan and Metro Manila. —KBK, GMA News
