ANDANAR SAYS

Emergency broadcast system to be launched within 3rd week of March

Communities in Metro Manila would soon have a reliable system to get information during times of calamity as the Presidential Communication Operations Office's People's Television Network (PTV4) will launch in the third week of the month the Emergency Warning Broadcast System (EWBS).

"This will be rolled out in Metro Manila in the third week of March," PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar said in an interview on Super Radyo dzBB on Saturday.

The EWBS, he said, was first launched in PTV4 Davao City last Wednesday.

"This is a very momentous event dahil first time in the Philippines na meron tayong EWBS," the Palace official said.

Andanar underscored the importance of having an EWBS.

"Pagka nagkaroon po ng isang bagyo, nagkaroon ng isang lindol, nagkaroon ng isang storm surge, 'yung EWBS system ang siyang magbubukas ng iyong telebisyon sa pamamagitan ng EWBS receiver... bubuksan 'yan automatic kahit nakapatay as long as nakasaksak sa kuryente... bubuksan niya and then magkakaron ng alarm sound then lalabas sa TV 'yung warning," he said.

"Ang bansa natin nasa tinatawag na Pacific Ring of Fire at dinadaanan tayo ng bagyo taon taon, so this is very important for us," he added.

"Itong EWBS ay gumagamit ng frequency ng telebisyon 'yung data dumadaan sa frequency ng telebisyon at hindi sa regular cellphone site... kahit magtumbahan na lahat ng cell-site sa oras ng mga bagyo you can still send data through television frequency," Andanar noted.

The Palace official said the government is planning to require through the National Telecommunications Commission manufacturers of digital TV receiver boxes to be compliant with EWBS. —LBG, GMA News
