Bongbong: 2 years, too long to wait for ‘true’ 2016 poll results

Two years after his election defeat, former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. still hopes to fast-track the process that he believes will reveal the "true" results of the 2016 polls.

Before observing the manual recount that is part of his legal challenge to Vice President Leni Robredo's victory, Marcos joined his red-clad supporters gathered outside the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday, two years to the day after the May 9, 2016 national elections.

"I think it is useful to remind ourselves that it has been two years since the elections of 2016 and up to now, two years on, we still do know the true results of the election of 2016," he told reporters in a brief interview.

"It is in my view [that] two years is too long for the people to be waiting to find out what really happened in the election, who is their true vice president, and if there are anomalies in the election, what happened, who is responsible, and what can we do to avoid in in the future," he said.

He said he will find explore other legal actions, if any, to speed up his poll protest, which he hopes will wrap up "as soon as possible." 

The manual recount of votes for vice president in Marcos' three pilot provinces of Camarines Sur, Iloilo, and Negros Oriental started on April 2.

The results of this recount will determine whether or not his poll protest will proceed with the remaining 31,047 protested clustered precincts.

Marcos is contesting Robredo's 2016 poll victory by 263,473 votes, which he claims was marred by fraud. He filed his poll protest on June 29, 2016, one day before Robredo assumed the country's second highest executive government post. — MDM, GMA News
