Duterte names new Comelec commissioner

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed a Davao-based official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) as successor to retired Commissioner Christian Robert Lim, a document released by Malacañang on Wednesday showed.

Duterte on June 18 named Marlon Casquejo to the post vacated by Lim in February.

Prior to his appointment, Casquejo was the assistant regional director of Comelec-Davao. He will serve for a seven-year term that is set to expire on February 2, 2025.

Casquejo is Duterte’s third appointee in the poll body.

Last November, Duterte promoted then-commissioner Sheriff Abas to chairman following the resignation of Andres Bautista  amid allegations of ill-gotten wealth.

The President in April tapped former Court of Appeals Associate Justice Socorro Inting, who hails from the President’s hometown, Davao City.

Abas and Inting secured the nod of the powerful Commission on Appointments last month.

Duterte still has to choose a commissioner that will complete the seven-man poll body.  — Virgil Lopez/RSJ, GMA News
