Death toll from Cebu floods rises to 10

The death toll from the flash floods in the province of Cebu has risen to ten, the Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said, according to a report on Balitanghali on Monday.

Eight of the fatalities were from the municipality of Carmen, one from Danao, and the other one from Alcoy in Southern Cebu.

National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council spokesperson Romina Marasigan earlier said 10 people from the municipality of Miranilla were injured, according to a report on News TV Live.

Heavy rains poured nonstop over the province of Cebu since Saturday, submerging homes in the municipality of Carmen, GMA News' Jun Veneracion reported in News To Go.

The municipality is the hardest hit area, he added.

Houses were damaged, fields were flattened, and trees were uprooted in Brgy. Poblacion in Carmen as the river overflowed, following raging waters from the mountain.

Among the fatalities in Carmen was a grandmother and her grandchild, who were swept away by the flood. Relatives said they tried to help as the grandmother held on to her grandchild but they were both swept away.

Some of the residents survived by climbing trees.

In Barangay Ipil, also in Carmen, a mother and her two children died. The husband could not help crying, Veneracion reported.

Meanwhile, in Mandaue City, the floodwaters reached waist level, a report on Unang Balita on Monday said.

Residents waded through flood strewn with garbage.

The heavy rains were brought by Tropical Depression Crising, a report on News TV Live said.

The local government has been busy distributing relief goods among the flood victims.

At least 70 families lost their homes and 10,000 individuals were evacuated.

The PDRRMO said it will extend P10,000 assistance to the families of those who died from the flood. —KG, GMA News
