Military validating reports Maute brothers Omar, Madie were killed in Marawi

A military official on Saturday said they were validating reports that brothers Madie and Omar Maute were killed following continuing clashes between government troops and local terrorists in Marawi City.

"There are reports that Omar and Madie were killed in the operations. We are still validating this report. But there are strong indications that they are killed... in separate incidents, in separate firefight," Lt. Col. Jo-Ar Herrera, 1st Infantry Battalion spokesperson, told reporters in a press briefing.

"As I said, we are doing the validation right now. Part ng validation namin is we want to see the body," Herrera added.

"We will give you the details when we receive the reports," Herrera said.

In a video recovered by the military, the Maute brothers were seen planning the attack in Marawi City with Abu Sayyaf group leader Isnilon Hapilon and other local terrorists.

The parents of Maute brothers had earlier been nabbed by authorities.

The father, Cayamora Macaraya Maute, was arrested at a checkpoint in Davao City and was later brought to a jail in Metro Manila.

Maute matriarch Ominta Romato Maute, alias Farhana, was nabbed in Masiu, Lanao del Sur on Friday night. She was later brought to Cagayan de Oro City.

Meanwhile, Herrera, in the same press conference on Saturday, echoed an earlier statement from AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla Jr. that Hapilon was still in Marawi.

"Yes, Isnilon Hapilon is still in the area," said Hererra.

President Rodrigo Duterte placed the entire Mindanao under martial law after Maute group members attacked Marawi City last May 23.
