PCG team arrives at Hasa-hasa Shoal to help extract grounded Navy frigate

A Philippine Coast Guard team on Saturday arrived in Hasa-hasa Shoal off southern Palawan to help in efforts at towing away Philippine Navy ship BRP Gregorio del Pilar that ran aground late Wednesday night.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Public Affairs chief Col. Noel Detoyato said that the PCG has already conducted an initial assessment and are planning the extraction of the frigate.

"Initial assessment has been made by FF15 crew and divers from PCG MRRV 4407. They are now planning the method of retrieving/extraction based on the gathered data by the divers. PCG MRRV 4409 is already near the site to augment our efforts," Detoyato said.

PCG divers conducted underwater assessments while waiting for other PCG and Navy vessels to arrive onsite to come up with the right strategy to extract the ship.

"May divers ang PCG from MRRV 4407 na tumutulong sa assessment ng condition ng pagkasadsad para maplano ng mabuti ang approach sa pag-retrieve. So, while waiting for the tugboats and other PCG and Navy platforms to arrive, surface and underwater assessments are being done to come up with the right plan of retrieval," Detoyato said.

According to a military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, the ship was conducting a routine when it figured in the mishap at the unoccupied shoal.
