3rd batch of 60 distressed OFWs arrive from Kuwait

A third batch of 60 distressed overseas Filipino workers arrived in the country from Kuwait early Friday morning.

A report by Sam Niesen on "Dobol B sa News TV" said that they arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 at about 6:40 a.m. on Philippine Airlines flight PR 669.

Nielsen quoted Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) officials as saying the most of the repatriates from Kuwait claimed they were victims of maltreatment, non-payment of salaries, and other forms of abuse by their employers.

But some of them have been sent home upon expiry of their employment contracts.

Batches of distressed OFWs are returning home from Kuwait after the Middle East state implemented a amnesty program for  overstaying foreign workers.

On February 2, a first batch of 39 distressed OFWs arrived in the country from Kuwait. This was followed by another batch on February 4.

Last Thursday, reports said that a body of a suspected Filipina maid was found inside a freezer in Kuwait. Authorities believe that the corpse has been stuffe in the fridge for over a year already.

Due to a series of mysterious OFW deaths in Kuwait, President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered a temporary ban on Filipino deployment to the Middle Eastern country, and even mulling the possibility of a total ban if the condition of Filipinos there would not improve. —LBG, GMA News
