Mayon Volcano logs 24 quakes, 257 rockfall events; Alert Level 3 still up

Twenty-four volcanic earthquakes and 257 rockfall events were recorded in Mayon Volcano over the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said Sunday.

The restive volcano in Albay also had 16 dome-collapse pyroclastic density current events and emitted a “moderate” 600 meter-tall of plume which drifted west-southwest and southwest from 5 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday, PHIVOLCS said in its bulletin.

Mayon Volcano, whose edifice is inflated, also generated 663 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux on Saturday.

It also continued to have a “very slow” effusion of lava flow, measuring 1.3 kilometers along the Mi-isi Gully and 1.2 kilometers along the Boga Gully.

The lava collapse on both gullies also reached within 3.3 kilometers from the crater, according to PHIVOLCS.

Alert Level 3 remained hoisted over Mayon Volcano due to its intensified unrest or magmatic unrest.

Nearly 39,000 affected

A total of 38,935 individuals or 10,121 families residing in 26 barangays, meanwhile, have been affected by Mayon Volcano’s unrest, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Sunday.

Of this number, 18,715 people or 5,356 families were staying in 28 evacuation centers in the Bicol Region, while 1,424 people or 407 families were seeking temporary shelters outside of evacuation centers.

NDRRMC said P91.8 million worth of assistance has been provided in the Bicol Region. —KG, GMA Integrated News
