PNP: Anti-Cybercrime Law won't be abused

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday sought to allay fears of abuses by the administration in implementing the controversial Anti-Cybercrime Act.

PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. reassured the public the PNP will continue to respect people's right to freedom of expression.

"Umasa sila hindi mag-aabuso ang PNP when it comes to the implementation of this law, contrary sa pinapakalat ng iba (People can be assured the PNP will not commit abuses when it comes to the implementation of this law, contrary to what some sectors are claiming)," Cerbo said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He was referring to claims spread by some groups that the PNP and other law enforcement agencies will crack down on freedom of expression, including criticisms of the government.

Earlier this week, photos resembling Facebook posts by the PNP were posted on the social networking site, suggesting the PNP is watching over Facebook users and will pounce on those who make criticisms against the government. Cerbo disowned the photos.

But Cerbo also maintained the PNP will be ready to implement the law.

"Umasa sila, ang kababayan natin, ang PNP ay nakahanda para sa batas na ito (Our people can be assured the PNP is ready to implement this law)," he said.

"The PNP will respect freedom of expression as guaranteed by our Constitution," he added.
