PBA: Pido Jarencio back as GlobalPort coach

Pido Jarencio will make his comeback as the head coach of GlobalPort Batang Pier for the Governors' Cup, team manager Bonnie Tan confirmed to GMA News Online in a phone interview.

Jarencio was relegated into a consultancy role mid-way into the Philippine Cup earlier this season following Batang Pier's 28-point loss to San Miguel Beer in the elimination round.

Assistant coach Eric Gonzales then took on coaching duties on an interim basis and retained the post in the Commissioners' Cup. He led the team to four wins in the mid-season conference, but is now back in his original role as Jarencio's deputy.

Jarencio, long-time head coach of the University of Santo Tomas, took over as GlobalPort's main tactician in the 2014 Commissioners' Cup. He led the team to seven victories in three conferences.

In preparation for their Governors' Cup campaign, Tan said Batang Pier is planning to get a tall import as the team is allowed to acquire a reinforcement of unlimited height in the season-ending conference.

The team initially wants to bring back Calvin Warner, who played for them briefly in the 2015 Commissioners' Cup, but they failed to make it to the playoffs which gave them the chance to get a taller import. —JST, GMA News
