Former congressman Angping is new PSC chairman

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Olympic Committee welcomed the appointment of former Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (ASAPhil) president Harry Angping as the eight chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC). Malacañang officially announced the appointment of Angping, a former Representative of the third district of Manila, to take the post from resigned chairman William Ramirez during Monday’s press conference handled by deputy presidential spokesperson Lorelie Fajardo. “The Palace hopes that new PSC chairman Harry Angping will serve as a worthy successor to William Ramirez who gave outstanding service to the commission," said Fajardo. Angping thus will be wearing two hats under the Arroyo government since he also serves as the President’s special envoy to China for tourism and investment. “The new leadership is expected to further improve the lives of Filipino athletes, foster a nurturing environment, instill integrity, strengthen athletics education and sportsmanship in the country and create a national sports development program that supports and uplifts the Filipino talents and spirit," added Fajardo. Angping will still serve as the softball chief until a replacement is named. His appointment as PSC chairman took its effect Monday. Fears of a possible clash between the PSC and POC headed by Jose Cojuangco Jr. arise after Angping’s name was floated as the new chairman of the government’s sports arm. Angping is one of shooting head Art Macapagal’s trusted supporter when President Arroyo’s half-brother ran for the POC presidency last year. Macapagal, however, failed in his bid narrowly losing by two votes to Cojuangco, 21-19. But the POC, through spokesman Joey Romasanta, said they welcome Angping’s appointment and is looking forward to a good working relationship for the good of Philippine sports. “Congratulations to chairman Harry Angping. The POC is looking forward to a meaningful and active partnership with the PSC for the greater good of Philippine sports and the country as well," said Romasanta. The POC also thanked Ramirez for his efforts to uplift Philippine Sports since he assumed the chairmanship in 2005. Angping thus becomes the eight individual to head the PSC since it was created in 1990. Past chairmen were Cecilio G. Hechanova (1990-92), Aparicio H. Mequi (1992-93), Gemiliano C. Lopez Jr. (1993-96), Philip Ella Juico (1996-98), Carlos D. Tuason (1998 to 2001) and William I Ramirez (2005-2009). – GMANews.TV
