MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines’ energy regulator is set to issue rules covering the use of pre-paid electricity meters, a move to assist to consumers cope with rising prices.

The scheme will cut electricity costs because “there will be less employees “to be employed by utilities and that consumers will be able to control their consumption," Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Chairman Rodolfo Albano Jr said.

Albano, who will retire from his post this July, said that the pre-paid scheme will be similar to the system currently being used by telecommunications providers.

He refused to five further details.

“We want to make sure that the meter will have a warning device that will inform users on the users’ credits. The prepaid scheme for electricity service is now under study by the commission and hopefully as we put the guidelines and rules on this our consumers will educate," Albano said. - GMANews.TV
