Blog software to offer new version by yearend

September 8, 2008 10:40pm
MANILA, Philippines - WordPress, a popular blog publishing system, will launch its upgrade later this year, its founder Matt Mullenweg announced in Manila on Saturday.

Called Crazy Horse, Wordpress’ 2.7 version will offer a “drag-and-drop" feature, a new module, and dynamic navigation, Mullenweg announced at a press conference during a one-day meeting of WordPress users in Manila.

Although he recognized that the new version may have features that may be “a lot less intuitive," Mullenweg said that the upgrade was developed using technology that tracked users’ eyes while they were configuring the software.

“We have more than four million beta testers everyday," Mullenweg said.

The new version is similar to a “Bizarro" WordPress, referring to a fictional comicbook character that was the diametric opposite of Superman.

Minutes after the briefing, Mullenweg delivered a presentation entitled “State of the Word" at an event called WordCamp Philippines 2008, the first such meeting of WordPress users in Southeast Asia.

During his presentation, the Houston, Texas native said that WordPress had 140 million visitors per month and saw a 166 percent increase in traffic, compared to last year.

WordPress.org also ranks as the 24th most-visited website, according to Alexa.com, a subsidiary of Amazon.com which measures web-traffic. Mullenweg wowed the crowd—a loyal group of WordPress.org users—when he pointed out that the Philippines ranked 24th in terms of WordPress users’ country of origin.

Currently, WordPress is being used by 7 million bloggers. Just for August this year, 1.3 billion words were produced by its users.

Next to English, Spanish and Bahasa Indonesia are the two most popular languages used by its bloggers, Mullenweg said. - GMANews.TV
