RP triathletes to test region's best in Asian championship
The Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) will be sending a four-member delegation to the Asian Triathlon Championships in Incheon, South Korea slated from August 28 to 29.
Lea Coline Langit and Niel Catiil, being groomed by TRAP for major international tournaments next year, will lead the Philippine team that will also saw Philip Jurolan and Johanna Pe Benito competing in their first international race.
“We don’t expect our athletes to win medals since they are up against world class triathetes and we will be happy if they finished in the Top 10. But we are using the event to gauge Langit and Catiil if they are indeed ready for major triathlon tournaments next year," said TRAP president Tom Carrasco, whose wards’ trip is being supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
Langit arrived last week fresh from a 71-day high performance training in Leizin, Switzerland. While in training, the 22-year-old triathlete competed in pocket triathlon events and even finished third in the 25th Dijon Triathlon at Lake Kir, Dijon, France.
While the Cagayan De Oro-native Catiil, 23, is also fresh from a first-ever win in the elite OSIM Singapore Triathlon held August 1 and 2.
Jurolan, a 17-year-old discovery also from Cagayan De Oro, and Pe Benito, who rose from the SuperKids Tri program, would also gun for qualifying slots in next year’s World Youth Games in Singapore.
“We want to determine if our programs for our young triathletes are on the right track. So far we have won medals in international events but it is in the Asian Championships where we would really be able to gauge our program since our triathletes will be up against tough and seasoned rivals," said Carrasco, who also added that he would be satisfied if ever Langit and Catiil managed to enter the Top 10 in their respective divisions.
After the event, Langit will head to Jeju, Korea for a four-month high performance training.
Kim Mangrobang, who along with Langit and Catiil are being readied for next year’s events including the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, will be heading for training in Gold Coast, Australia for the ITU Under-23 High Performance Camp.
National coach Melvin Fausto will join Mangrobang and will fly to Australia on Thursday where they will stay until September 8.
