Pinay golfers six shots behind Koreans in Sirikit Cup
The Philippine ladies golf team assembled 141 in its best showing so far, but it still finds itself six shots behind leader Korea in the second round of the 2011 Queen Sirikit Cup Golf at the Delhi Golf Club in New Delhi, India on Thursday.
The Filipinas are in second with a 288 aggregate.
The Koreans banked on the 69 of Hyo Joo-kim to take the lead position with 282.
New Zealand (146) and Chinese-Taipei (145) have 296 each for a share of third to fourth places, while China is not far behind with a 297 after a 145.
Dottie Ardina, who has been steady for two straight rounds now, finished the 17th hole at four-under. However, she hooked a three-wood drive into the woods off the tee and had to scramble for a double bogey on the par-five 18th hole.
Ardina wound up with a two-under 70 to pace the squad. Jayvie Agojo, whose score didn’t count in the opener, improved with a one-under 71 for 141 for the day. Chihiro Ikeda’s 82 was scratched from the three-to-play, two-to-count format.
“We are six down from Korea, but still in contention. We’ll give it all on the last day," said national coach Bong Lopez.
Agojo, the University of Pepperdine graduate, hit well on straight drives, something essential in the narrow fairways of the 6,100-yard course of Delhi. She salvaged an even at the turn on a long, 15-foot par putt on the ninth hole.
She dropped a shot on the 11th where she three-putted, then bounced back with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 13 (one foot) and 14 (seven feet).
Driving woes bugged Ikeda on the back side as she missed all fairways in regulation. Four consecutive bogeys from the 10th and a triple bogey on the par-five 14th were too much for her to recover from . -Adrian Flores, RCJ, KY, GMA News
