Filipino children in Poland performed Philippine songs with the world-famous Warsaw Boys Choir to mark Philippine Independence Day and the 150th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal earlier this month.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the choirs sang at the diplomatic reception at the Restauracja Belvedere, an orangery at the Łazienki Krowlewski (Royal Park) of Warsaw last June 14.

“A first in the practice of singing anthems in diplomatic receptions in Warsaw, the world-renowned Warsaw Boys Choir, together with the Filipino children in Poland, sang the Polish and Philippine national anthems," the DFA said in a press statement.

Some 200 guests from the diplomatic corps, Polish business and government officials, and Philippine professionals attended the reception, the DFA said.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for International Development Cooperation Krzysztof Stranowski also graced the occasion.

Earlier on June 12, the Philippine Embassy in Warsaw marked Independence Day and Rizal’s birth anniversary with some 200 Filipinos from Warsaw and other areas of Poland.

“As it was also Pentecost Sunday, two Filipino priests opened the celebration with a holy mass and enjoined Filipinos in Poland to continue practicing their Christian faith and upholding the traditional values of the Filipino people," the DFA said.

After the flag-raising ceremony, the messages of President Benigno Aquino III and Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario were read by Ambassador Edgardo Manuel and First Secretary and Consul Indhira Bañares, respectively.

The exhibit on Jose Rizal’s life and the film “Lagi Kitang Naalala" directed by Cultural Center of the Philippines Associate Director Chris Millado were shown.

The film showcased music by national artists Levi Celerio and Lucio San Pedro performed by various Filipino artists including the Philippine Madrigal Singers, Regine Velasquez, Isay Alvarez, Roselle Nava, Franco Laurel, Bituin Escalante, Gary Valenciano and Sharon Cuneta. - VVP, GMA News
