Former World 9-Ball champion Ronnie Alcano and reigning World 8-Ball titlist Dennis Orcullo dispatched separate foes to set up an all-Filipino semis match in the 2011 World 9-Ball Championship at the Al Saab Sports Club in Doha, Qatar. Alcano defeated Japan's Toru Kobayashi, 11-10, while Orcullo downed former World 9-ball titlist Daryl Peach, 11-4, in the quarterfinal round to set up a semis match-up. The winner will advance to the finals. Venancio Tanio failed to join Alcano and Orcullo in the semis after dropping a thrilling 11-10 match against Japans' Yukio Akakariyama, who will take on Mark Gray after the Englishman scored an 11-9 win over American Shane Van Boening. Alcano squandered a 7-3 lead and even allowed the Japanese to tie the match at 8-8 and take a 10-9 lead. But thanks to the alternate break format, Alcano won the next rack to force a hill-hill encounter. After a series of safeties, Alcano finally cleared the table with a long shot to sink the three-ball to clinch the match. Orcullo, on the other hand, had an easier time against Peach and opened the match with a 5-0 lead, an advantage that the England could not overcome. "I'm hungry to win this tournament," Orcullo said in the World Pool Association (WPA) website. "I have a lot of experience and I know how to focus. I always want to play good in any tournament but this one is big." Orcullo earned a spot in the Elite 8 after dispatching 2010 9-ball champion Francisco "Django" Bustamante, 11-7. After an 8-8 tie, it was a seesaw battle for Tanio and Kobayashi that went hill-hill. Tanio, however, made a poor preparation on the nine-ball to miss the final ball and Kobayashi, who beat scored an 11-8 win over Antonio Lining in the Round of 32, took advantage to enter the Final Four. Tanio earned a trip to the quarterfinals after an 11-9 upset of Germany's Ralf Souquet. The semifinals and the finals will be played late Friday night. - Reuben Terrado/JVP, GMA News
