Starting in August, motorists passing through Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard have to limit their speeds to 60 kilometers per hour, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Monday. In a radio interview, MMDA assistant general manager and spokesperson Tina Velasco said they already published a resolution imposing the speed limit on the road. “Ipapatupad ito sa August. Nag-publish kami around a week ago so ipapatibay na rin natin yan, effective matutuloy na rin at rollout natin sa Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard," Velasco said in an interview on dwIZ radio. Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard in southern Metro Manila will be the second major thoroughfare in Metro Manila that will be subjected to a 60-kph speed limit. On January 25, the MMDA started implementing a 60-kph speed limit along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City, dubbed a "killer highway" due to the high number of road accidents there. Velasco said the speed limit had brought down the number of road accidents along Commonwealth Avenue. “Sa Commonwealth, despite fatal accidents this year, may general improvement against last year magmula pinatupad ang 60-kph speed limit from January 25. Track natin ang accident reports, (may) 25-30 percent improvement so far," she said. Velasco said the MMDA is eyeing imposing the 60-kph speed limit on other major thoroughfares, including Osmeña Avenue and Roxas Boulevard, and even C-5. “(MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino) is looking at Roxas Boulevard and Osmeña Avenue. Sa gabi delikado pag maluwag ang daan, nagre-racing ang sasakyan. Even C-5," she said. On the other hand, Velasco said the MMDA is not keen on imposing a speed limit on Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) at this time. She said the average speed at EDSA is 29 to 32 kph due to the high volume of traffic there. However, Velasco also said the MMDA needs to beef up its equipment to enforce the speed limit. “We want to strengthen the no-contact policy and intelligent traffic system ... at sana sama-sama yan bago makabuluhang pangkalahatang solusyon," she said. - VVP, GMA News
