Blaze Boosters import willing to suit up for SMB in ABL
Fresh from steering Petron Blaze to the PBA Governors Cup title, import Anthony Grundy is willing to have another tour of duty with the San Miguel group of companies. And that includes a possible stint with the team the Beermen is fielding in the third season of the Asean Basketball League (ABL). "If the opportunity presents itself, why not," said Grundy when asked about the possibility of being tapped as import to reinforce the Beermen in their initial stint in the fledgling regional cage meet. The 32-year-old Grundy dropped 26 points, including 12 in the pivotal third period, in the decisive Game 7 of the season-ending conference as the Boosters completed one of the greatest upsets in PBA history by beating heavy favorite Talk 'N Text, 85-73. By winning the best-of-seven title series, Petron avenged its Philippine Cup Finals lost to the Tropang Texters early this year, but more importantly, denied the telecommunication franchise of its ambitious bid to become only the fourth team to achieve a Grand Slam in the 36-year old pro league. "To tell you honestly, I'm still feeling the effect (of the championship) right now," said the 32-year-old import, who won his first overseas championship in nine years of playing outside of the U.S. "Nobody gave us a chance (to win), and that made it special." The Louisville, Kentucky-native was so overwhelmed by Petron's feat that he's extending his stay in the country, with his wife set to arrive within the week. "I don't want to leave the Philippines," the import with droopy eyes said with a smile. And that again brought up the idea of playing in the ABL for a while, since the 37th season of the PBA starting on October 2, would kick off with the All-Filipino conference (Philippine Cup). Besides, the Beermen are going to be handled by seven-time Best Import Bobby Parks, who also worked closely with Grundy as bench consultant with Petron. - JVP, GMA News
