DepEd campaigns to end violence vs. women, human trafficking
As part of its campaign to end violence against women (VAW) and human trafficking, the Department of Education (DepEd) is incorporating new lessons into the elementary and high school curricula.
The DepEd said Gender and Development lessons on equality between men and women are being incorporated in lessons in public elementary and high schools. In a statement, DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said they have integrated gender equality in subjects such as English, Filipino, Araling Panlipunan, and even Mathematics.
“It is important that children learn at an early age that violence in any form is not acceptable more so if inflicted against women and children,” Luistro said.
The gender equality lessons are part of DepEd’s participation in an 18-day campaign against VAW, together with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the Inter-Agency Council on Violence Against Women and their Children (IAC-VAWC).
The campaign, which ends on Dec. 12, focuses on information dissemination about VAW and how victims and survivors of violence can seek help from government and non-government organizations. Campaign vs. human trafficking
Meanwhile the DepEd is also joining the awareness program of the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) from December 5 to 12.
The campaign aims to inform the public about the modus operandi of traffickers, and educate young students on the issue, especially in light of their vulnerability to traffickers.
The information campaign will be accomplished through a 40-minute film showing during the Makabayan lesson or a similar subject in selected public schools across the country. - with Amanda Victoria Lago, VVP, GMA News
