Apple Mac App Store breaches 100M download mark
Less than one year after it was launched, Apple’s Mac App Store – a marketplace for desktop apps on Apple’s Macintosh computers - has seen users download 100 million applications from it.
Tech site Mashable reported the feat prompted Apple Inc. to call the Mac App Store the world’s biggest and fastest-growing PC software store.
“With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac App Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world,” it quoted Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, as saying.
Mashable also quoted Apple as saying the App Store - the Mac App Store’s sister – offers more than 500,000 apps, with users downloading 1 billion apps per month.
It added Apple claims the total number of downloads had reached more than 18 billion.
The Mac App Store, launched in January 2011, was modeled after the iOS App Store, which provides applications for devices running iOS such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Presently, the Mac App Store serves as a distribution point for popular Mac apps, including Apple’s latest Mac operating system OS X Lion. — TJD, GMA News
