74th UAAP: Ateneo trips UP, continues to shadow women's volley champ La Salle

Ateneo snatched its fourth win in six games and at the same time dealt University of the Philippines its sixth straight loss, 25-13, 25-21, 25-12, in the 74th UAAP women's volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City. Ateneo coach Roger Gorayeb, despite the easy win, wasn't satisfied with the Lady Eagles' performance against the Lady Maroons. "We're happy with the win, but we committed 12 unforced errors in the second set and we allowed them to score easy points," said Gorayeb. Veterans Fille Cainglet, Gretchen Ho and Dzi Gervacio, and rookie Alyssa Valdez teamed-up in the second and third frames to complete the straight-set win. Valdez and Cainglet scored 15 points each, while Ho and Gervacio combined for 14 hits and Libero Denden Lazaro contributed 11 digs for the Lady Eagles. Angeli Araneta and Jezza Lasmarias had 13 hits for UP, which collected 23 points from Ateneo's errors. University of Santo Tomas, after a 0-2 start, is slowly getting its groove back as the Tigresses notched their fourth straight triumph at National U's expense, 25-11, 25-21, 25-18, in the other women’s game. Maru Banaticla again played big for the Tigresses with 15 hits, a strong performance complimented by frontliners Maika Ortiz and Midori Hirotsuji, who tallied eight points each. Cai Nepomuceno registered 12 pointsall on attacksfor the Lady Bulldogs, who dropped its fourth straight game after opening the season with a victory over the Lady Maroons. In the men's division, Adamson denied Far Eastern University its sixth straight win as the Falcons pulled off a nail-biting 21-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10 triumph, while Rueben Inaudito scored 15 points in NU's 25-18, 25-21, 25-20 victlory over La Salle. — JVP/KG, GMA News
