Businesses warned vs new FDIC malware attack
Internet users, particularly businesses, were warned this week against a new malware attack using emails claiming to be from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC).
Computer security firm Sophos said it has intercepted a “large number” of such emails that claim to have important information about the recipient’s bank.
“We have important information about your bank... Please refer to attached file to view information.... This includes information on the acquiring bank (if applicable), how your accounts and loans are affected, and how vendors can file claims against the receivership,” a Sophos blog post quoted one such email as telling the recipient.
Sophos said the emails have a ZIP file attachment that contains a malicious payload designed to infect computers running Microsoft’s Windows OS.
It said its anti-virus products detect the attachment proactively as Mal/BredoZp-B and Mal/Zbot-EZ.
The computer security firm reiterated its advice to Internet users to be wary of opening emails they receive, especially those with attachments. — TJD, GMA News
