Updated iOS 5.0.1 hack allows untethered jailbreaking

January 26, 2012 6:37pm
An updated hack now allows owners of Apple iPad 1s, iPod Touches and pre-4S iPhones running the latest iOS 5.0.1 to jailbreak their devices untethered.

The Chronic Dev and iPhone Dev teams came up with the jailbreak for A4 devices on iOS 5.0.1, Apple's latest OS for mobile devices.

Tech site CNET reported that while the jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 was available last week, the untethered version was confirmed only last Sunday.

Jailbreaking allows users to install third-party applications from outside of Apple's own App Store - including apps that can access deep hardware features.

"(But) there are still no known jailbreaks for the iPhone 4S, though the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, and the third- and fourth-generation iPod Touch all have been jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1," it noted.

It pointed out the latest hack may not work on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, which run Apple's newer A5 processor.

CNET also noted the latest hack came shortly after the release of an unofficial port of Siri for older iPhones. — TJD, GMA News
