Ateneo swept the first round of eliminations in the UAAP baseball tournament after the Blue Eagles defeated rivals De La Salle, 8-4, Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. Ateneo Rookie Dio Remollo blasted an RBI (run batted in) single off La Salle pitcher Carlos Muñoz, to score Matt Laurel, as the Blue Eagles broke a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning and took the lead the rest of the way. The Blue Eagles won all their five assignments and are on the verge of winning their first-ever UAAP baseball crown. The Green Archers, meanwhile, dropped to 4-2 but remain in second place in the standings. University of the Philippines, Ateneo's neighbor, meanwhile, dropped a 4-2 decision against Adamson in the early match to remain winless in five games. The Falcons claimed their second win in five outings. Majority of Ateneo’s victories came in convincing fashion but it appeared La Salle would hand the Blue Eagles their first loss. After Adrianne Bernardo's run-scoring tripe gave Ateneo a 4-1 lead, La Salle managed to tie the count in the fourth on errors committed by the Blue Eagles. After Remollo’s run-scoring hit in the sixth, Ateneo chalked up three runs in the eighth to clinch the victory. — JVP/KG, GMA News
