Adamson, UP remain 1-2 in UAAP softball tournament

Reigning titlist Adamson University and University of the Philippines remained the top two teams in the 74th UAAP softball tournament after posting contrasting wins over separate respective foes Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Adamson only needed four innings to dispatch La Salle, 11-0, while UP had to pour it all in the fourth to beat Ateneo, 8-3. The Lady Falcons remained unbeaten in six games and 16 straight since last season. The Lady Maroons are in second with a 5-1 slate. Julie Marie Muyco and Rizza Bernardino starred for the Ana Santiago-coached Adamson softbelles combining for five runs. The duo was also impressive on the mound with combined six strikeouts. In the other softball match UST blanked UE, 3-0, to remain third with a 4-2 record. The Lady Warriors are fourth (2-4), while the Lady Eagles and Lady Archers dropped to a 1-5 and 0-6 card, respectively. In men's tennis at the nearby Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, La Salle defeated Ateneo, 4-1, at the start of the second round to extend its winning streak to six matches. Defending champion University of Santo Tomas beat UP, 3-1, for its third win in six outings in the other men's match. The afternoon matches between National University and University of the East in the men's side and between La Salle and Ateneo in the women’s division were rained out. In men's volleyball, team skipper Rodolfo Labrador Jr. had 13 hits, two blocks and a service ace to power Far Eastern University to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-20 win over UE. The Tamaraws clinched the first Final Four berth.   NU, in the other men's match, kept its semis hopes alive after trouncing Ateneo, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20. — JVP, GMA News
