Taiwanese envoy who 'abused' Pinay helpers to be questioned
The Taiwanese diplomat who pleaded guilty in the United States to labor fraud charges against her Filipina helpers may be questioned when she returns home to Taiwan, a news site reported on Thursday. According to a report of Taipei Times, Jacqueline Liu, former head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Kansas City, will not be detained upon arriving at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. US federal agents arrested Liu last November for allegedly overworking and underpaying two Filipino housekeepers. Last Jan. 27, a US judge agreed to the terms of a plea agreement where Liu was to be sentenced to time served and ordered to pay US$80,044 in restitution to the two housekeepers before being deported. Taiwan prosecutors said Liu will not be immediately detained for questioning upon arrival because she was not “caught in the act” of committing a crime. The prosecutors said they would investigate whether Liu was involved in embezzling funds or other irregularities, aside from the labor charges, the report said. However, the report said aTaiwanese can only be prosecuted in Taiwan for serious offenses committed overseas, such as those that carry jail terms of more than three years. If Liu’s case does not involve a felony, corruption or embezzlement, she may not be prosecuted, the Taipei Times report said. - VVP GMA News
