A recent international survey showed that more expatriates are preferring to live in Australia rather than in the United States or Singapore because of the quality of life and career prospects. The HSBC's Expat Explorer survey, released on Thursday, was conducted among some 3,000 expatriates in over 100 countries, the news site Gulf News said. The respondents were asked to rate nations based on criteria such as accommodations, food, health care, and the quality of the commute to work. A separate report of Reuters said 10 percent of the respondents picked Australia, "known for its sun-drenched beaches and solid economy."

"The report suggests expats are putting lifestyle and well-being ahead of money and Australia wins hands down on this front," said Graham Heunis, head of retail banking and wealth management for HSBC Bank Australia.

The United States received slightly fewer votes than Australia and came in an extremely close second. The US was seen as a country that offered "the best career opportunities with higher remuneration," the report said.

Singapore narrowly came in third with 9 percent. The respondents perceived that Singapore appeared to combine the best of both worlds --  "good quality of life along with prime job opportunities." The other countries in the top seven countries preferred by expats are:

  • Hong Kong,
  • Canada,
  • United Kingdom, and
  • France.
