A week after a magnitude-6.9 earthquake jolted the area, a magnitude-4.8 quake hit Negros, said state seismologists, who warned residents of possible aftershocks.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake was recorded at 11:39 p.m. Tuesday, and was tectonic in origin.
In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter of the quake was located 17 km southeast of Tayasan town in Negros Oriental.
An initial assessment showed the quake was felt at Intensity II in Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.
While Phivolcs said it does not expect damage from the quake, it advised residents to expect aftershocks.
Last Feb. 6, a magnitude-6.9 quake devastated parts of Negros, killing at least 42 people.
Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey measured Tuesday night’s quake at magnitude 4.7, with the epicenter at:
- 57 km west-southwest of Cebu
- 65 km northwest of Tagbilaran, Bohol
- 84 km north of Dumaguete City
- 569 km south-southeast of Manila.
