Women's History Month March 8 is celebrated as International Women's Day. According to the site About.com, a New York Times company, International Women's Day was first celebrated on March 8, 1911 in Europe. At that time, women's rights was a hot political topic. Woman suffrage or the women's right to vote, was being pursued by many women's organizations.
By the 1970s, a new call emerged: the need to include in "history," "her story" as well. In the United States, some women's groups claimed that "women were invisible in most history courses. And so in the 1970s many universities began to include the fields of women's history and the broader field of women's studies," About.com said.
In 1978, the celebration of "Women's History Week" began, coinciding with International Women's Day, March 8. - VVP, GMA News
